The Season Has a Story
Are We Paying Attention?
The leaves do not all change at once. What can this teach us about the stories we tell?
Some turn golden, others crimson, while some hold on to green a little longer.
There is a lesson here for communicators. People, organizations and communities do not experience change in the same way or at the same pace.
Autumn offers more than beautiful colours. It brings harvest celebrations, festivals, family traditions and moments of reflection. Each holds stories about what matters to people, what they have experienced and what they carry forward.
For organizations, these everyday moments offer opportunities to tell stories that help people understand not just what is happening, but why it matters.
Finding the story beneath the surface
Change is more than an announcement. Behind a new strategy, service or direction are people experiencing its effects in different ways. Their perspectives can help others understand what the change means in practice.
Harvest is more than the result. Behind an achievement are people, decisions, effort and lessons learned. Sharing these parts of the journey helps audiences see the work behind the outcome.
Festivals are more than dates on a calendar. Cultural celebrations and community gatherings offer opportunities to learn about the traditions, experiences and values that matter to people. The most meaningful stories begin by listening, not assuming everyone shares the same experience.
Reflection is more than looking back. As the year draws to a close, organizations can look beyond milestones and ask what their experiences have taught them, whose contributions deserve recognition and what they want to carry forward.
What can communications teams take away?
Avoid one-size-fits-all storytelling. Understand your audience, notice the details and recognize the different experiences behind a shared story. Ask whose perspective is missing, look beyond the headline and give people the opportunity to share their experiences in their own words.
Not every experience needs to become public content. When sharing personal stories, respect people’s choices, seek appropriate consent and represent their experiences accurately.
At NillaRock Communications, we believe meaningful storytelling starts with paying attention to people. It is about finding the details that help others understand an experience, connect with a perspective or see why an organization’s work matters.
The season has a story. So do the people around us.
What story might your organization be overlooking this autumn?
